An organization is CMMI level 3 if it demonstrates the following characteristics as it goes about doing its day to day business:
1. The organization has a clear understanding of its process needs, current strengths and weaknesses against the process and improvement needs, and an action plan for process improvement. This is driven by OPF (Organizational Process Focus) Process Area of CMMI.
2. The organization has a set of standard process assets with tailoring criteria and guidelines. This is driven by OPD (Organizational Process Definition) Process Area of CMMI.
3. The organization deploys the standard process assets across projects in the organization. with tailoring criteria and guidelines. This is driven by OPF (Organizational Process Focus) Process Area of CMMI.
4. Projects refer to the standard process assets along with tailoring criteria and guidelines to define the project-specific processes. Projects also refer to the historical process performance data and experiences while defining the project-specific processes. Process deviations, if any, are waived off through approvals from the process group and the management. This is driven by IPM (Integrated Project Management) Process Area and GP3.1 of CMMI.
5. Projects are managed and executed in accordance with the project-specific processes. This is driven by IPM (Integrated Project Management) Process Area of CMMI.
6. Projects capture their actual process performance results and experiences and share back with the organization (typically via the 'process group'). This is driven by IPM (IntegratedProject Management) Process Area and GP3.2 of CMMI.
7. Organization uses actual process performance results and experiences received from projects to further improve and fine tune the standard process assets and the tailoring criteria and guidelines. This is driven by OPF (Organizational Process Focus) Process Area of CMMI.
