ISO 9004 is concerned with providing guidance to organizations as they adopt and mature a quality management system. The quality management system is typically established, used and improved in accordance with ISO 9001 (probably the most widely adopted ISO standard).
Unlike the ISO 9001 standard, however, ISO 9004 is not meant for third-party certification, regulatory or contractual use. However, it is similar to ISO 9001 in terms of its applicability since any type of organization, regardless of size, type and activity can put ISO 9004 to use. Although ISO 9004 complements the ISO 9001 standards and vice-versa, it can also be used independently. It is also not be be construed as a guide for implementing ISO 9001.
ISO 9004 strengthens the process and improvement program of an organization. It enables an organization to institutionalize the ISO 9001 and other good practices for sustained success in its business operations and continual performance improvement, amidst today's complex business environment.
